Leather rewards a little attention. None of this takes long, and most of it is simply about how you store and dry the jacket.
Everyday habits
- Hang it properly. Use a wide, shaped hanger so the shoulders keep their form. Avoid thin wire hangers.
- Give it air. Store it somewhere cool and ventilated, never in a plastic bag.
- Keep it out of strong sun and heat. Long exposure dries and fades leather.
- Empty the pockets. Heavy items stretch the leather out of shape.
If it gets wet
Blot off excess water with a soft cloth and let the jacket dry naturally at room temperature on a hanger. Never use a radiator or hair dryer; fast heat can make leather stiff and brittle. Once dry, a light conditioner helps restore suppleness.
Cleaning and conditioning
Wipe away surface dirt with a soft, dry cloth. Condition smooth leather a few times a year, or when it starts to feel dry. Always test a new product on a hidden area first. Suede is different: use a suede brush to lift the nap and a suede eraser for marks, and skip creams and oils.
When to get help
For deep stains, tears or failing stitching, go to a professional leather cleaner or repairer rather than trying a home fix.
